How to Apply a Ceramic Spray Coating (Without Streaks or Haze)
5 min read

A ceramic spray coating is the single highest-impact thing you can do for your boat's finish. Done right, water beads and sheets off, spots wipe away, and the gloss lasts for up to 6 months. The spray is the easy part. Prep and technique decide how long it lasts.
Step 1: Start with a clean, decontaminated surface
A coating only bonds as well as the surface underneath it. Wash with a wax-safe soap like Sea Scrub and dry completely. Any salt, oil, or old product left behind shortens how long the coating lasts.
Step 2: Work in the shade, one section at a time
Never coat a hot surface in direct sun — it flashes too fast and streaks. Pick a 2-3 foot section and mist a light, even layer. A little goes a long way.
Step 3: Spread, then flip to buff
Spread the product with one microfiber towel, then immediately follow with a second, dry microfiber to buff it to a clear, streak-free gloss. That second-towel buff is the difference — skip it and you'll find the haze in tomorrow's sun.
Step 4: Let it cure
Keep the surface dry for 2-4 hours. Protection keeps building over the first 24 hours, so try to coat the day before a calm, dry stretch.
Step 5: Maintain it
- Rinse and wash normally — the coating does the work.
- Re-apply a light coat every few months to top up protection.
- Skip non-skid decks, where you want grip, not slickness.
That's the whole job: a wash, a light mist, two towels.
